Earlier summary May 2024

After 41 years, Mole Valley MP constituency abolished

But don’t worry – the Parliamentary seat is changing but NOT the District Council. The two areas did not cover all of the same territory anyway.

Kenneth Baker (Lord Baker of Dorking) former Cabinet Minister and Sir Paul Beresford were the two Mole Valley Members of Parliament, both arriving as displaced MPs from Greater London constituencies after previous boundary changes – 1983 and 1997.

Now, the area represented by Sir Paul from 1997 until midnight on Wednesday 29 May is split in a number of directions into other seats for the July 4 General election, with new MPs elected as so many of the current Surrey MPs are not standing.

Here’s where the many villages in the ex Mole Valley constituency :

The Tillingbourne ward around Shere and Chilworth joins the new Godalming and Ash constituency being constested by the current Chancellor Jeremy Hunt.

The Effingham, Send, Horsleys, Ripley, Ockham areas join the new Guildford constituency.

Leatherhead North and South wards join the Epsom & Ewell seat, which Ashtead was already in.

Fetcham, Bookham, Headley, Mickleham and Westhumble go with the Dorking area into the new Dorking and Horley constituency, plus the Ewhurst area.

Sir Paul has issued a departing statement at the very end of his 32 years in Parliament, 27 of them in Mole Valley. https://www.facebook.com/SirPaulBeresford He was probably the last Minister in the John Major Government left in Parliament ?

End of an era.

The NEW Dorking and Horley constituency – including Fetcham, Bookham but NOT Leatherhead.

Boundaries are reviewed from time to time by an independent Commission aiming to equalise the number of voters in each MP’s constituency.

Other notable changes to this end for the 2024 election are a new cross county seat Farnham and Bordon containing parts of Surrey and Hampshire, plus the inclusion of a few wards in the Virginia Water area in the Windsor constituency. With Cobham and Oxshott separated from the Esher constituency for the first time since 1950 and included in the Runnymede/Weybridge seat being defended by its 2019-24 MP Dr Ben Spencer.
